The title track of Dustin Lynch’s Killed the Cowboy, out now, is one of the country star’s more devastating songs, a vulnerable breakup ballad with a massive chorus to match its outsized emotions. With an ache in his voice, Lynch sings, “If you wanna know what killed the cowboy,” before answering, “A girl like you.” Lynch tells Apple Music that while he was reeling from a breakup while making the LP, he’s fortunately in a much better place now. “As I've talked about these songs and this album, and really why I named it Killed the Cowboy, it is about a lot about me,” he says. “At that point, it was a pretty crazy rollercoaster ride of just meeting somebody and maybe going a little bit too all-in, and then that burning up quick. I think I’m in a good spot right now. I’m happy.” This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges.
