Luke Combs is making waves on the country charts and beyond with his cover of Tracy Chapman’s beloved 1988 song “Fast Car,” which Combs covered on his latest LP, Gettin’ Old. Combs tells Apple Music that the classic song, which notched Chapman a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1989, was his “first favorite song” thanks to his father playing Chapman’s self-titled debut album while the pair drove around in his father’s truck. Though his cover brings a more country flavor to the song, Combs sought to stay as true to the original as possible, adding, “You just want to be mega-respectful of the song. That’s why in that song, it’s ‘Work in the market as a checkout girl.’ I didn’t change that in my version. I really wanted to just do the original version of the song.” This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges.
